Government of India considers manufacturing of carbon fibre
According to media reports government of India is planning to replace metal with carbon fibre composites in some key areas such as the aerospace, civil engineering and defence. For this, it is considering to start manufacturing carbon fibre in the country. Presently India has been importing carbon fibre from USA, France, Japan, Germany etc… Manufacturing carbon fibre will not just reduce India’s dependence on imports, but will also enhance the country’s self-reliance as well as strengthen its position in high-tech industries. “This plan includes conducting research in premier technical institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to ensure that these manufacturing units meet international standards,” the report quotes some officials saying. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd is the industry partner of the textiles ministry for this project, the report said. The project is part of the National Technical Textiles Mission that commenced in 2020 to oversee various technical textiles activities. Manufacturing carbon fibre in India will help the country get around a proposed European Union carbon tax on steel, alloy, and metal products.
